8. What is the basic structure of a model?

This is the bare-bones structure of a model:

Note that the name starts with an uppercase letter – this is the default convention for the model name. By adding the ‘extends CI_Model’ part, you can make use of all the helper functions that are present in CodeIgniter’s main class.

Here is how you would define a function inside a model:

I love that you even call your employees ‘partners’ rather than workers, and that feels like a harmonious space to be in and come to work each day.

Additionally, I love drinking coffee from Starbucks and sitting in the stores and absorbing the atmosphere.

2. What is your favorite drink at Starbucks?

This may seem like an odd question, but what you are really being assessed here is your Starbucks product knowledge

Example Answers:

  • My favorite drink would be the mocha whip, in cold months, as I love the taste and warming feeling. 
  • I love, in warmer times, the vanilla cold brew, as it feels like a great energy boost, as well as a sweet treat.

Of course, as a hospitality employee, you must have strong customer service skills. The hiring manager will most definitely want to get a sense of your command of customer service.

Everyone has innate skills that will help them through life. This is about expressing what your ‘superpowers’ are, in referencing the role of a Starbucks employee.

Example Answer:

I am super friendly and sociable. It’s natural for me to talk to people and make friends easily, so this allows me to really provide a level of customer service that is extremely high, without much effort on my part to put on a happy face, since I am genuinely happy to be working with and serving people every day.

5. How much hospitality experience do you have?

For this question, share any past experience you have in hospitality or a cafe environment.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Share how many years/months of experience you have, naming the places you worked and the responsibilities you had.
  • Focus on the roles you loved the most as the interviewer will feel your enthusiasm. 
  • If you have no experience, share that you are looking for your first hospitality experience in this role. Additionally, you can share a past experience where you may have been hospitable to a friend or family member.

Working in any hospitality role, Starbucks requires partners to work well within a team in a stressful environment.

Example Answer:

My clear and direct communication makes teamwork smooth as we are all able to stay on the same page as to what needs to be done, and my value of harmony within environments also allows me to be sure that we are all communicating with respect and positivity.

Additionally, I am more than happy to receive feedback from other team members on how I can improve my skills.

Starbucks is definitely fast-paced! If you can’t handle a morning rush, then you won’t be suited for this role.

Example Answers:

  • I thrive in fast-paced environments. I personally love working in dynamic environments where I can move fast, juggle multiple tasks at once, and be on my feet moving about every day. 
  • I get bored when things are slow, so even if it’s not so busy with customers, I’ll find another job to busy myself with.

8. What are some of your strengths?

You can refer to your character traits or core skills you have learned in your hospitality training/experience.

Example Answers:

I know that making complex drinks and great coffee is one of my strengths, now that I have mastered the espresso machine. I particularly enjoy milk frothing and help others on the team with their skills. I feel that my memory is very strong, allowing me to remember multiple orders and customers’ names with ease.

9. What are some of your weaknesses?

This is important to share how you are working towards strengthening parts of you that may be a little weaker in your skills or traits.

Example Answers:

  • I would say that actually my sociable personality, which is a strength, can also be a weakness, at times, as I love chatting to customers so much, that I need to remember that the most important thing is to serve them in an efficient way.
  • I am learning how to serve and chat, and politely move away from the conversation to make sure all the tasks are being done.

10. How would you handle a customer who tells you their order is wrong?

How would you handle a customer who tells you their order is wrong?

This will likely be a scenario that you will deal with multiple times, and you’ll probably experience a whole spectrum of responses – from calm and polite, to frustrated and shouting. 

This is also a very common Starbucks interview question, so paying extra attention to this can be advantageous. 

Example Answers:

  • I would ask first what their order was, and what they received/what is wrong. I would make them a new drink immediately if it were an entire drink that was wrong. 
  • If it were that there was something in the drink that was not correct, I would ask why they are not enjoying their drink as expected. I may need to then make adjustments to the temperature, flavoring, topping, or simply remake their drink again if need be. 

11. What mistakes have you made in a past role, and how did you fix them?

The interviewer will appreciate seeing your humility and your maturity in handling the fact that you will make mistakes. What’s important for them to sense is that you are geared towards growth and solving issues like mistakes, along the way.

Example Answer:

In my previous role working for a local coffee shop, when I was first learning to steam milk for coffee and pour properly, I would have difficulty making latte art.

I asked my coworker for help to let me know if the amount was correct and the steaming was right, and with their help, I quickly fixed the mistake that I was making (steaming for too long and pouring too little froth into the cup).

12. If we ran out of a product or an ingredient, how would you communicate this to a customer?

The importance of communicating with customers is extremely high for any foodservice role. You need to be able to share information, take orders, and listen effectively as a Starbucks employee. 

Example Answers:

  • I would first apologize and state that we do not have a particular ingredient for their item, and if there is a solution to replace it with something else, ask them if they would like that. 
  • If it were an entire item that we couldn’t make, I would suggest other items similar to them and also ask about what they are looking for to point them to other menu items to consider.

Hopefully, this never has to happen – but if you’ve worked in hospitality for a few years, you know this will eventually happen (even more so if someone hasn’t had their morning coffee). In any case, be prepared to answer this question if it comes up.

Example Answers:

  • I would stay calm and make sure I was in a space where I was non-reactive, and not taking it personally. I would ask them to step aside with me, to be away from the public space, if possible. 
  • I would try to express my understanding, and ask that they please lower their voice. If this does not work, I would call on my supervisor to take on this situation, staying present to answer any questions that might come up if a conversation ensues.

Hopefully, you have some hospitality experience going into this interview, so you can answer this question from your personal understanding. If not, then remember this example answer.

Example Answer:

I would say that the pace of work is probably the biggest challenge. For some, it may be customer service – keeping friendly with disgruntled customers – but for me, I feel that staying accurate and graceful in multiple tasks is what can be challenging in hospitality.

One of the many common Starbucks interview questions will be your availability for the role. Ideally, HR managers are looking for more flexibility, but you also have to be upfront about any prior commitments.

Tips for answering this question:

  • If you have flexible availability, share that there are no times off-limit in your schedule.

This may happen from time-to-time, and the manager will understand this. Expressing your mode of conflict resolution is beneficial for the hiring manager to see that you have the competency needed to handle this were it to come up in your role.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Speak about a specific example from your past and what you did to resolve the issue.
  • Make sure that you focus on how the issue was resolved for the customer and their level of satisfaction from the resolution. 
  • If you don’t have an example, share how you would go about this situation, in a mature, mindful, and patient manner.

This is important as you are not only there to help people use the database, but to actually be your own kind of database that understands what new books and topics are available to people.

  • If you have lower proficiency in typing, share that you are learning to type faster, and have been improving.

Different roles and companies will demand different levels of handling correspondence with clients and co-workers. Share your experience in your answer.

  • My level of grammar and spelling, as well as professional standard English composition, is high, which made this correspondence feel easy to me.

  • I would love to join a company that is not only enjoying this success, but that would benefit from my skills to continue to enhance their cash flow, reduce costs, and have clear and effective systems in place.

You may be required to communicate with clients and vendors in this role, so share your experience with this, if you have any.

Example Answer:

I have had a great deal of interaction with vendors and clients in my previous bookkeeping roles, through sending out notices to clients when bills were due, as well as answering their queries and explaining reports when asked. This has given me a chance to become more personable and confident in my communication.

Every bookkeeper needs experience and expertise using software and systems.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Create a list of all software, programs, and systems that you have used in the past or have learned how to use and remember to reference these when asked. 
  • You’ll need to speak about how proficient you are at using the systems, and which ones you may not know, but are willing to (or in the process of) learning.

Once the error has been confirmed, I’d calculate the columns backward from the bottom to the top, and later test for advanced errors if needed like transposed numbers.

Two main methods of reporting are used in business, and showing that you understand them will highlight your proficiency as a bookkeeper.

Example Answer:

Cash basis is more ideal for tax accountants because it is more simple.; Accrual basis is the best method for bookkeepers to get a clear financial picture to then report to management.

8. How do you handle tough deadlines and stressful situations?

This is one of the most common bookkeeper interview questions, so being prepared for it will help you stand out.

Example answer:

  • I work best when given a deadline, as it allows me to prioritize my tasks and create an organized mode of working which thrives when there’s some time pressure.
  • In terms of stress, it doesn’t so much affect me, though when things get intense at work, I have some calming techniques to stay in a grounded place – like going for a walk or meditation.

9. Are you familiar with local, state, and federal legal requirements and policies?

Employers need to know that you are working within set policies and laws relevant to the industry that you are working in. 

Tip for answering this question:

Stating that you have this understanding, and also that you regularly check any legislative changes is what the hiring manager is looking for.

Showing that you can communicate complex information to anyone is key when you are in a role that communicates with the public. 

Example Answer:

I would be sure to not use technical language or reference numbers, but instead describe the situation and what the reports mean in a more overarching sense, rather than focusing on specifics and equations that aren’t relevant for the public to know.

This is your chance to highlight your unique talents.

Definitely time management. Handling multiple tasks at once requires strong time management skills, and I feel that over the years I have honed in these skills to become great at managing my tasks and prioritizing jobs.

  • I seek out sources for the information and compile key sources together to extract upon as I am writing. I start with the body of the article and complete the introduction and conclusion at the end, referencing all sources in the employer’s preferred mode of reference.

  • Speak about how image formatting, structure, and compression enhances user experience.

For different companies and industries, the expectation to upsell or sell products and services to customers will be different. Some call centers may just be for taking in complaints and concerns, whereas others are about promoting the company’s offerings. 

In the case of promoting offerings, share in the interview that you have a clear understanding of how to communicate with customers about products and services in a compelling and educated way.

Example Answers:

  • If customers are calling about a specific service/product, then I would listen and be sure to reference our product list to identify similar products that they are after, as well as additions of upselling higher ticket items that meet their needs. 
  • By explaining the benefits of the products, especially if it is upselling, the customer will understand the advantage of purchasing this, therefore making him/her more likely to purchase.

A call center representative is in the field of customer service, first and foremost. So having a strong customer service skill set is crucial. 

Example Answer:

Customer service is about being able to empathize with a customer, on a human level, treating them with respect and patience to view the issues as if they were my own. 

This allows me to problem-solve in a way that feels for them that they have been totally heard and that their concern is valid.  Additionally, being able to act and rectify a situation that satisfies customers is also incredibly important.

Example Answers:

  • If a caller was disgruntled and angry, I would first put my focus on remaining professional and calm. 
  • I will be sure to still empathize with their concerns and listen for what their real issue is, underlying their anger and frustration. 
  • I would ask clarifying questions to be sure that we are on the same page about the issue, and I would express to them the steps I will take to move towards a resolution for them.

Being able to recount an experience you have had in your past roles that highlights your strengths is well received by prospective employers.

Tips to answer this question:

  • Provide a real example with detailing the experience and what happened, rather than being vague and broad in your answer.
  • Focus on an example where both the customer, and the company, benefited in the situation.
  • Explain how the customer felt from the praise/feedback that was given so that you can reference their experience and not just your own. 
  • Share how this experience motivates you to continue to be a top customer service representative.
  • If you have not any previous experience, it’s ok to say so. You could also share an experience where you might have helped a friend, family member, or even stranger.

8. Describe a moment where you made a mistake in your role, and how you handled it.

The interview needs to know that you have strong problem-solving skills as mistakes do and will happen. For this question, show when things went south, but don’t forget to include how you fixed the situation for a positive outcome.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Only share an example that had a great outcome, and reveals your skills in your answers.
  • Focus on explaining the solution, and what you learned in coming to that solution after the mistake.

  • My cheerful and friendly character is definitely a big strength for this role, as I often get feedback from callers that they felt great and encouraged from our talk, having my energy lift their spirits.
  • My time management is a strong skill, as I have always been organized with my tasks, whether personal or professional, and bringing this to the role, I am able to handle large quantities of work, with clear prioritization so that I never miss a deadline.

Sometimes this question will be simply asked as ‘what are some of your weaknesses’… but the key is to share, in either case, that you are working on your weakness and actively willing to grow.

Example Answer:

One of my weaknesses would be my perfectionism, as I don’t like the feeling of making mistakes or things being inefficient. 

Though this is also a strength of mine, sometimes it is a weakness when it comes to attaching to things being so perfect that I get hung up on the small details, when what is really needed is the willingness to try again, or try something else.

Some call center roles won’t need this, but others will. Be prepared to answer this in your interview in the case that cold calling is a requirement.

Quite simply, I don’t take it personally. That is key to being able to handle rejection with a shrug of my shoulders, knowing that it isn’t about me, it’s simply about them and their desire to receive what we are offering.

This is likely to happen, so be prepared to answer this as the hiring manager is looking for your ability to think on the spot and problem solve.

  • When I am asked a question that I am unsure of the answer to, I will not dismiss the customer and tell them I do not know, instead, I will ask them politely to wait for a moment as I explore their query. 
  • I would either search for the answer, or consult another member of the team, or a supervisor.

  • If you have no preference and would work anytime at all – share that you have open availability and desire to work as much as needed.

This is a more practical question, focused on when you can and can’t work.

Tips for answering this question:

  • If you have open availability, let them know that there are no days or hours that are off-limit in terms of your schedule.
  • If you have some days or times where you definitely can’t work, share the exact days and times and also why this is the case.
