The framework is available as open-source software under the MIT License and follows the model-view-controller (MVC) structure for web development. It also has a very small footprint, taking up very little space on the computer/server.

2. What is the latest version of CodeIgniter?

Although CodeIgniter 3.1.11 is the current version that is used alongside PHP 5.6+, the team is developing CodeIgniter 4, an upcoming version that will be used for web development in PHP 7.2.

3. How do you check the version of CodeIgniter you are using?

There are 2 ways to do this. The first is to run the following line of code:

This pattern allows for very little scripting and a strong, logical overview of the application by separating the software’s logic from its presentation.

  • Model: this encompasses all of your data structures that are directly linked to a particular database. It also contains functions that allow you to retrieve, save, and manipulate data in the database.
  • View: the view, as the name suggests, is everything that is visible to the user. Typically, this refers to a webpage but CodeIgniter also includes entities like headers and footers in the view.
  • Controller: the controller acts as the ‘puppet master’ that manages the seamless integration of models and views by acting as an intermediary and taking care of any other resources needed to process HTTP requests.

6. What is the architecture of CodeIgniter?

There are 3 key details about the architecture of CodeIgniter that you should remember:

  • It is dynamically instantiated making it extremely lightweight
  • The components are mostly independent, making it loosely coupled
  • Every class and function focuses on its own purpose, giving it component singularity

A lot of CodeIgniter interview questions focus on models. Let’s explore them in detail now.

Models are PHP classes that define how the application interacts with the database. Just like other classes, models contain functions that retrieve, store, insert, and change the information the database contains. These are stored in the application/models folder.

8. What is the basic structure of a model?

This is the bare-bones structure of a model:

class Model_name extends CI_Model {

}

Note that the name starts with an uppercase letter – this is the default convention for the model name. By adding the ‘extends CI_Model’ part, you can make use of all the helper functions that are present in CodeIgniter’s main class.

Here is how you would define a function inside a model:

public function get_last_ten_entries()

$query = $this->db->get(‘entries’, 10);

Return $query->result();

}

From this example, you can see how the ‘$query’ command is accessing the database ‘db’ to ‘get’ 10 entries from it and returning it to the function call.

9. How to add/load a model in CodeIgniter?

You will use one of your controller methods to load your model. Use the following code:

$this->load->model(‘model_name’);

If your model is in a sub-directory, replace ‘model_name’ above with the path of the subdirectory. So if your model is in application/models/placeholder/name.php, you will put ‘placeholder/name’ inside the parenthesis.

10. How do you auto-load a model that is to be used globally?

Open the application/config/autoload.php file and add your model to the autoload array. This way, your model will be loaded automatically when the system is initialized.

Following on from its MVC structure, CodeIgniter uses a segment-based approach to URLs instead of the standard query-string approach. Here is an example:

website.com/class/method/ID

Here, the first segment represents the controller to be called, the second represents the specific method from that controller, and the third (and any additional ones) is for variables and IDs to be passed to the method.

18. What is a CodeIgniter inhibitor?

An inhibitor is an error-handler that takes care of errors and faults in your application and processes them in a way that allows you to fix them easily. It formats the error message, puts it in the log, mails it, and redirects the application to a temporary view.

19. What default method does CodeIgniter call?

CodeIgniter will always call ‘index.php’ as the default method unless you have specified something else. You can specify a different method by defining it in the Controller file and calling it explicitly.

20. How do you override the default method through remapping?

You can do this by adding the _remap() function to the Controller file and passing the preferred method you want to load as a parameter. Here is the code for this:

Notice that the code will override the default method only if another method is provided in the parameters.

A helper is simply a file that contains useful functions that help make a task easier for you. There are different kinds of helper files:

  • URL helpers that make creating links easier
  • Text helpers that make text editing and manipulation more convenient
  • Cookie helpers which help you manage and read cookies

22. How do you load a helper file?

You load a helper file by adding the following line of code to either the constructor of the controller or inside any function that needs to use it:

$this->load->helper(‘name’);

So if you’re loading the ‘text_helper.php’ file, you should replace the ‘name’ in the code by ‘text’, and you’re good to go.

23. How do you load multiple helper files?

Instead of passing in a single helper in the parameters, you just have to send in an array of helper files. Here is how this is done:

$this->load->helper(array(‘helper1’, ‘helper2’, ‘helper3’));

24. How do you auto-load a helper file?

Sometimes, when a helper file is needed throughout the application, you can auto-load it by adding the above-mentioned line of code to application/config/autoload.php.

25. What is a library in CodeIgniter? How do you load it?

Libraries are packages made in PHP that provide higher-level abstractions and so make development a lot faster. These remove the need to focus on small, minute details by taking care of those by itself.

To load a library in CodeIgniter, this is what you have to do inside a controller:

$this->load->library(‘class_name’);

26. Where are all libraries located in CodeIgniter?

All the pre-packaged libraries developed by CodeIgniter are available in the system/libraries directory.

27. How do you load multiple libraries at the same time?

The process is similar to loading multiple helper files. You use the same line of code for loading one library but replace the parameter with an array.

$this->load->library(array(‘library1’, ‘library2’));

28. How can you create libraries? What else can you do?

You can create entirely new libraries from scratch inside your application/libraries folder by coding the classes from scratch. However, you can also extend a native library if you want to add some custom functionality to it.

If you find that a native library is not useful and you have a better idea, you can even go ahead and replace it altogether. To summarize, you can:

  • Create new libraries
  • Extend native libraries
  • Replace native libraries altogether

29. What are some naming conventions you should follow while creating libraries?

There are 3 conventions you should follow to make your own life easier:

  • Capitalize all file names, e.g. Sampleclass.php
  • Capitalize all class declarations, e.g. class Sampleclass
  • Choose the same name for your files and classes

30. What is the basic prototype of a class file?

Here is the basic prototype of a class file:

31. What is the method to extend a class in CodeIgniter?

To extend a class, you have to create a file named MY_Input.php in the application/core/ directory with the declaration:

Note that once again, the name of the class and file has been kept consistent.

32. What is an example of a URL routing different from the default one?

By default, CodeIgniter follows a standard structure for the URL which gives the first segment to the class and the second to the function. This is what it looks like:

something.com/class/function/id

However, you can choose to have a different structure. Here is one example:

something.com/product/1

something.com/product/2

something.com/product/3

In this example, the second segment is kept for a product ID instead of a method.

33. How do you specify your own routing rules?

First, you have to navigate to application/config/routes.php, and locate the array called $route. Next, you can use either a wildcard entry or a regular expression.

You can have two kinds of wildcards:

  • Matching only numbers through: num-series
  • Matching only characters through: any-series

Here is an example of creating a regular expression to route through your own URL choice:

There are several reasons why you would configure URL routes:

  • It can increase the page visits to your website through better search engine visibility
  • It can help hide the complex expressions from your users

Hooks are features that allow you to manipulate the way CodeIgniter normally executes its program, without going into the relevant files and meddling with the code.

This is particularly useful if you want to change the order of execution of scripts or add in a controller call before the view is loaded.

I love that you even call your employees ‘partners’ rather than workers, and that feels like a harmonious space to be in and come to work each day.

Additionally, I love drinking coffee from Starbucks and sitting in the stores and absorbing the atmosphere.

2. What is your favorite drink at Starbucks?

This may seem like an odd question, but what you are really being assessed here is your Starbucks product knowledge

Example Answers:

  • My favorite drink would be the mocha whip, in cold months, as I love the taste and warming feeling. 
  • I love, in warmer times, the vanilla cold brew, as it feels like a great energy boost, as well as a sweet treat.

Of course, as a hospitality employee, you must have strong customer service skills. The hiring manager will most definitely want to get a sense of your command of customer service. 

Example Answers:

  • Customer service is about going beyond what is expected to ensure that customers leave feeling fulfilled in having their needs and desires met through our products and service, as well as being delighted by the entire experience. 
  • Great customer service is about being fast and responsive, personable, and friendly, especially in remembering people’s names and listening to the customer in their orders, requests, and feedback.

Everyone has innate skills that will help them through life. This is about expressing what your ‘superpowers’ are, in referencing the role of a Starbucks employee.

Example Answer:

I am super friendly and sociable. It’s natural for me to talk to people and make friends easily, so this allows me to really provide a level of customer service that is extremely high, without much effort on my part to put on a happy face, since I am genuinely happy to be working with and serving people every day.

For this question, share any past experience you have in hospitality or a cafe environment.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Share how many years/months of experience you have, naming the places you worked and the responsibilities you had.
  • Focus on the roles you loved the most as the interviewer will feel your enthusiasm. 
  • If you have no experience, share that you are looking for your first hospitality experience in this role. Additionally, you can share a past experience where you may have been hospitable to a friend or family member.

6. How would you describe your teamwork skills?

Working in any hospitality role, Starbucks requires partners to work well within a team in a stressful environment.

Example Answer:

My clear and direct communication makes teamwork smooth as we are all able to stay on the same page as to what needs to be done, and my value of harmony within environments also allows me to be sure that we are all communicating with respect and positivity.

Additionally, I am more than happy to receive feedback from other team members on how I can improve my skills.

Starbucks is definitely fast-paced! If you can’t handle a morning rush, then you won’t be suited for this role.

Example Answers:

  • I thrive in fast-paced environments. I personally love working in dynamic environments where I can move fast, juggle multiple tasks at once, and be on my feet moving about every day. 
  • I get bored when things are slow, so even if it’s not so busy with customers, I’ll find another job to busy myself with.

8. What are some of your strengths?

You can refer to your character traits or core skills you have learned in your hospitality training/experience.

Example Answers:

I know that making complex drinks and great coffee is one of my strengths, now that I have mastered the espresso machine. I particularly enjoy milk frothing and help others on the team with their skills. I feel that my memory is very strong, allowing me to remember multiple orders and customers’ names with ease.

9. What are some of your weaknesses?

This is important to share how you are working towards strengthening parts of you that may be a little weaker in your skills or traits.

Example Answers:

  • I would say that actually my sociable personality, which is a strength, can also be a weakness, at times, as I love chatting to customers so much, that I need to remember that the most important thing is to serve them in an efficient way.
  • I am learning how to serve and chat, and politely move away from the conversation to make sure all the tasks are being done.

10. How would you handle a customer who tells you their order is wrong?

How would you handle a customer who tells you their order is wrong?

This will likely be a scenario that you will deal with multiple times, and you’ll probably experience a whole spectrum of responses – from calm and polite, to frustrated and shouting. 

This is also a very common Starbucks interview question, so paying extra attention to this can be advantageous. 

Example Answers:

  • I would ask first what their order was, and what they received/what is wrong. I would make them a new drink immediately if it were an entire drink that was wrong. 
  • If it were that there was something in the drink that was not correct, I would ask why they are not enjoying their drink as expected. I may need to then make adjustments to the temperature, flavoring, topping, or simply remake their drink again if need be. 

11. What mistakes have you made in a past role, and how did you fix them?

The interviewer will appreciate seeing your humility and your maturity in handling the fact that you will make mistakes. What’s important for them to sense is that you are geared towards growth and solving issues like mistakes, along the way.

Example Answer:

In my previous role working for a local coffee shop, when I was first learning to steam milk for coffee and pour properly, I would have difficulty making latte art.

I asked my coworker for help to let me know if the amount was correct and the steaming was right, and with their help, I quickly fixed the mistake that I was making (steaming for too long and pouring too little froth into the cup).

12. If we ran out of a product or an ingredient, how would you communicate this to a customer?

The importance of communicating with customers is extremely high for any foodservice role. You need to be able to share information, take orders, and listen effectively as a Starbucks employee. 

Example Answers:

  • I would first apologize and state that we do not have a particular ingredient for their item, and if there is a solution to replace it with something else, ask them if they would like that. 
  • If it were an entire item that we couldn’t make, I would suggest other items similar to them and also ask about what they are looking for to point them to other menu items to consider.

Hopefully, this never has to happen – but if you’ve worked in hospitality for a few years, you know this will eventually happen (even more so if someone hasn’t had their morning coffee). In any case, be prepared to answer this question if it comes up.

Example Answers:

  • I would stay calm and make sure I was in a space where I was non-reactive, and not taking it personally. I would ask them to step aside with me, to be away from the public space, if possible. 
  • I would try to express my understanding, and ask that they please lower their voice. If this does not work, I would call on my supervisor to take on this situation, staying present to answer any questions that might come up if a conversation ensues.

Hopefully, you have some hospitality experience going into this interview, so you can answer this question from your personal understanding. If not, then remember this example answer.

Example Answer:

I would say that the pace of work is probably the biggest challenge. For some, it may be customer service – keeping friendly with disgruntled customers – but for me, I feel that staying accurate and graceful in multiple tasks is what can be challenging in hospitality.

One of the many common Starbucks interview questions will be your availability for the role. Ideally, HR managers are looking for more flexibility, but you also have to be upfront about any prior commitments.

Tips for answering this question:

  • If you have flexible availability, share that there are no times off-limit in your schedule.
  • If you have days/times where you definitely can’t work, share the details as clearly as possible and be sure to tell them why you can’t work.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Speak about a specific example from your past and what you did to resolve the issue.
  • Make sure that you focus on how the issue was resolved for the customer and their level of satisfaction from the resolution. 
  • If you don’t have an example, share how you would go about this situation, in a mature, mindful, and patient manner.

This is important as you are not only there to help people use the database, but to actually be your own kind of database that understands what new books and topics are available to people.

  • Through my memberships of online databases of different genres of books, I read reviews about best-sellers or new and noteworthy titles as they come up, almost daily.

Being able to express the areas where you are learning is beneficial in your interview. Surprisingly, many banks like training staff with their processes, so being honest can allow you to learn, and maybe even train in the future.

Example Answer:

I tend to be so sensitive to people’s energy that one of my weaknesses is feeling bad when people are waiting in line for a long time. 

I’m working on not taking responsibility for that and accepting that sometimes things will take time and all I can do is just wait and work as best I can, knowing that people are responsible for their own emotions.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Focus on a situation where the customer was very happy and fulfilled, as well as the bank benefiting from the exchange.
  • Explain how you made this happen, and the skills and your expertise that created this experience, so the interviewer knows that you are aware of how to recreate this experience again. 

10. How would you deal with a customer complaining about slow service?

This will undoubtedly happen at some point since banks are known for long lines. Even if the service is fast on the bank teller’s part, customers may simply be impatient.

Example Answers:

  • I would listen to the customer, and state that I understand what they are saying, while also reassuring them that we are doing the best we can to fulfill their needs. 
  • If they are looking for a service that our smart ATMs can handle, I would point them in that direction, so they don’t need to continue to wait.

11. How do you check for counterfeit cash and fraudulent checks?

If you have expertise in this from past experience, be sure to share this, as you will need to know how to do this as a bank teller.

Example Answer:

I have used a counterfeit pen for checking cash, and I also know how to look for the holograph and the vertical strip with the denomination of the bill. 

Spotting fraudulent checks is more complex, but I am inspired to learn with some hands-on training so I can detect fake checks in this role.

Although the answer to most will be obvious, you’ll likely get asked this to assess how trustworthy and honest you are.

Example Answer:

  • No amount of money is ok being stolen. I would align with the policies of our company and notify the supervisor straight away. 
  • Turning a blind eye to these actions would be doing a disservice to the company and our clients who entrust their money with us, and my own personal moral code wouldn’t let me go without saying anything.

13. How do you feel about up-selling products to customers who are depositing money?

You are not only there to assist with transactions, but to also encourage more sales for the bank, so the interviewer will like to see how you answer this question. 

Example Answers:

  • I feel that it’s important to express to customers what is available to them, as I legitimately believe in the value of banking products to support their financial goals. 
  • I would connect with them on a human and personal level, sharing my own experience and chatting in a way that does not feel like I am trying to ‘sell’ them anything, but rather to share information. 

14. What is the biggest challenge working as a bank teller?

Employers like to see that you have a deep understanding of the role of bank tellers and what they will likely face day-to-day. 

Example Answers:

  • I would say that for me, the biggest challenge has been balancing being accurate and focused on transactions while keeping customers happy through efficient service. 
  • I’ll remind myself that some customers may just be impatient and that there is nothing I can do about that beyond letting them know I’ll be with them shortly. 
  • Ideally, I’d be able to serve everything fast and no one would wait, but that’s not the reality of working for a busy bank.

15. What is your availability?

This practical question comes up towards the end of the interview, especially if you are being seriously considered for the role.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Are you flexible to work whenever required? If so, share that you can do as many hours as needed, as well as over-time.
  • Do you have certain time/day restrictions? Try to shuffle these around to suit the bank’s working hours, or if that’s not possible, clearly explain when and why you can’t work those times.

16. What is your ideal work schedule?

This question is about preferences in terms of how you would like your schedule to be – some employers might have the flexibility to cater to needs. 

Tips for answering this question:

  • Share any preferences for workdays/times openly. Focus on communicating that you’re most concerned with getting consistent work. 
  • Ideally, employers want you to have no preference. If that’s the case for you, share this.

17. Do you have any questions for me?

Ask questions in the interview to show that you are enthusiastic about this role. 

Example Answers:

  • What defines a successful bank teller, in your eyes?

This is most likely to be the first of all of the call center interview questions that you’ll be asked. The interviewer wants to understand why you have applied, and see how invested you are in the role. 

Tips for answering this question:

  • Research the company and provide facts from your research to show that you know about the company and are invested in the job. 
  • Share about how you go into this field and why you enjoy it.
  • Explain your desires for future growth, as employers like to see that you are in it for the long-term, rather than this being a passing role that you will soon leave. Employers want to invest in long-term employees who will be an asset to their company.

2. Describe the role of a call center representative.

Answering this question will show your understanding of the expectations of the role. In this answer, share the definition of a call center representative, and also highlight the skills and proficiencies needed to be successful.

Example Answers:

  • A call center representative will answer questions, provide solutions, and sell/promote products and services over the phone to existing and prospective customers. 
  • I would be the first contact for incoming/outgoing calls, which requires me to actively listen to concerns and questions in a friendly way. 
  • Assisting the customer is the main priority, and expressing my knowledge and patience in my communication is key as a call center representative.

For different companies and industries, the expectation to upsell or sell products and services to customers will be different. Some call centers may just be for taking in complaints and concerns, whereas others are about promoting the company’s offerings. 

In the case of promoting offerings, share in the interview that you have a clear understanding of how to communicate with customers about products and services in a compelling and educated way.

Example Answers:

  • If customers are calling about a specific service/product, then I would listen and be sure to reference our product list to identify similar products that they are after, as well as additions of upselling higher ticket items that meet their needs. 
  • By explaining the benefits of the products, especially if it is upselling, the customer will understand the advantage of purchasing this, therefore making him/her more likely to purchase.

5. What makes customer service great?

A call center representative is in the field of customer service, first and foremost. So having a strong customer service skill set is crucial. 

Example Answer:

Customer service is about being able to empathize with a customer, on a human level, treating them with respect and patience to view the issues as if they were my own. 

This allows me to problem-solve in a way that feels for them that they have been totally heard and that their concern is valid.  Additionally, being able to act and rectify a situation that satisfies customers is also incredibly important.

This is one of the other most common call center interview questions, as it will likely happen in real-life, and employers need to be confident that you know how to handle this issue.

Example Answers:

  • If a caller was disgruntled and angry, I would first put my focus on remaining professional and calm. 
  • I will be sure to still empathize with their concerns and listen for what their real issue is, underlying their anger and frustration. 
  • I would ask clarifying questions to be sure that we are on the same page about the issue, and I would express to them the steps I will take to move towards a resolution for them.

7. What is one of your best customer service experiences? 

Being able to recount an experience you have had in your past roles that highlights your strengths is well received by prospective employers.

Tips to answer this question:

  • Provide a real example with detailing the experience and what happened, rather than being vague and broad in your answer.
  • Focus on an example where both the customer, and the company, benefited in the situation.
  • Explain how the customer felt from the praise/feedback that was given so that you can reference their experience and not just your own. 
  • Share how this experience motivates you to continue to be a top customer service representative.
  • If you have not any previous experience, it’s ok to say so. You could also share an experience where you might have helped a friend, family member, or even stranger.

8. Describe a moment where you made a mistake in your role, and how you handled it.

The interview needs to know that you have strong problem-solving skills as mistakes do and will happen. For this question, show when things went south, but don’t forget to include how you fixed the situation for a positive outcome.

Tips for answering this question:

  • Only share an example that had a great outcome, and reveals your skills in your answers.
  • Focus on explaining the solution, and what you learned in coming to that solution after the mistake.

Now is the time to highlight yourself. Don’t try for false modesty here, as they want to hear about your strengths, so share them!

Example Answers:

  • My cheerful and friendly character is definitely a big strength for this role, as I often get feedback from callers that they felt great and encouraged from our talk, having my energy lift their spirits.
  • My time management is a strong skill, as I have always been organized with my tasks, whether personal or professional, and bringing this to the role, I am able to handle large quantities of work, with clear prioritization so that I never miss a deadline.

10. What are some weaknesses that you are working on?

Sometimes this question will be simply asked as ‘what are some of your weaknesses’… but the key is to share, in either case, that you are working on your weakness and actively willing to grow.

Example Answer:

One of my weaknesses would be my perfectionism, as I don’t like the feeling of making mistakes or things being inefficient. 

Though this is also a strength of mine, sometimes it is a weakness when it comes to attaching to things being so perfect that I get hung up on the small details, when what is really needed is the willingness to try again, or try something else.

11. Are you comfortable with cold calls?

Some call center roles won’t need this, but others will. Be prepared to answer this in your interview in the case that cold calling is a requirement.

Example Answer:

Yes, I am comfortable with cold calls. I understand that it is part of the role and I am confident enough to communicate to prospective customers in this way.

12. How do you feel when faced with rejection from cold call situations?

Knowing how to navigate the challenge of rejection is key to being a call center representative, especially if you are cold calling.

Example Answer:

Quite simply, I don’t take it personally. That is key to being able to handle rejection with a shrug of my shoulders, knowing that it isn’t about me, it’s simply about them and their desire to receive what we are offering. 

13. If you are given negative feedback from a customer, how would you respond to them and management?

14. What do you do when you don’t know the answer to a question that a customer is asking?

This is likely to happen, so be prepared to answer this as the hiring manager is looking for your ability to think on the spot and problem solve.

Example Answers:

  • When I am asked a question that I am unsure of the answer to, I will not dismiss the customer and tell them I do not know, instead, I will ask them politely to wait for a moment as I explore their query. 
  • I would either search for the answer, or consult another member of the team, or a supervisor. 
  • If I cannot come to an answer at that moment, I would take the person’s details (email or phone) to get back to them at a later date after having searched for the answer.

This question is not about your availability, but your preferences in terms of working. 

Tips for answering this question:

  • If you share that you’d only like to work minimal hours, this will not look good. You’ll be seen as unmotivated or not a committed employee.
  • If you have preferences for working some days or hours over others, share them, while also expressing that you aren’t attached and that to have consistent work is most important.
  • If you have no preference and would work anytime at all – share that you have open availability and desire to work as much as needed.

16. What is your availability?

This is a more practical question, focused on when you can and can’t work.

Tips for answering this question:

  • If you have open availability, let them know that there are no days or hours that are off-limit in terms of your schedule.
  • If you have some days or times where you definitely can’t work, share the exact days and times and also why this is the case.

17. What questions do you have for me?

Asking questions to the hiring manager will show that you are engaged, interactive, and enthusiastic about the role.

Example Answers:

  • How does a successful call center representative perform, and what defines their success, in your eyes?
